Saint Valentine’s Day
Blah blah roses blah candy blah kissing blah pregnancy.
We’ve made it easy on you: We came up with an itinerary gives you ideas for romantic dining establishments, lovey-dovey movies to watch, and hopefully you’ll be able to take over after that.

Flicker Film Festival
Flicker is a bi-monthly film festival that only features shorts that were originally shot on film. It’s too late to submit your work to be shown in this viewing, but that doesn’t mean you can’t check out masterpieces by local filmmakers. Tonight, the festival is celebrating its sixth birthday and will feature footage from vintage birthday parties.

of Montreal, Elekibass, DJ Jester The Filipino Fist
These guys just don’t know how to quit. In their 10-year history, of Montreal has released eight studio album as well as several notable EPs and compilations. Everything that spews from their experimental psychedelic straw is spun into to melodic gold. They’re so hip, even Outback Steakhouse lured them into transforming their song “Wraith Pinned to the Mist (And Other Games)” into a juicy commercial jingle (YouTube link).

Independence Brewery presents Draft Sessions
Indie music plus indie beer? Get ready to dance against your will. Come early for the Awesome Cool Dudes, and stay late for Til We’re Blue or Destroy. You’re not seeing double – Til We’re Blue really has that many people. Their bouncy keyboard/horn/guitar combo hits the spot. If you’re still not convinced, proceeds benefit the Groundwork Music Project, which offers music lessons to underprivileged children. Just go drink some awesome beer, jerk.
See a slideshow from the last Draft Sessions.

Sounds Seen - VJ Competition
This ain’t no Kennedy vs. Downtown Julie Brown affair. These are laptop-wielding DJs with serious skills. Local wizards fuse their turntables and laptops to create live audio/visual magic. No pre-recorded sequences allowed here, only live on-the-fly video and music mixing like you’ve never seen before. It’s not an entirely new art, but this scene is trying its hardest to build some local cred in Austin. Prepare to be amazed.

Just for Laughs Comedy Festival Showcase
Come check out stand up comedians from Austin, Houston, and Dallas as they try to impress our northern neighbors. These jokesters will vy for a chance to be invited to the annual Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, Quebec. This is a great opportunity to catch all of Texas’ local talent under one roof. What’s the best part? An employee at Cap City told us this event will be free. If it sounds too good to be true, prepare to dish out a measly 5 bucks.

The Roots, with Lupe Fiasco
We were first introduced to Lupe Fiasco last year by an obnoxious, poor quality, loud, and generally terrible commercial that ran what seemed like twice every commercial break on cable stations. Then we started hearing more and more about him, saw him on countless Top Whatever Albums lists, and we finally gave him a listen. And, well, he’s fucking good. Heavily influenced by Nas, this Chicago rapper has a knack for clever lyrics and tracks that just won’t get out of your head like “Kick, Push.”
