The Mean Eyed Cat is a Bar dedicated to the memory and music of Johnny Cash. The building used to be a Cutrite saw store. The atmosphere is relaxed and the beer is reasonably priced. Monday through Thursday everything is $1 off. Owner Chris Marsh is an extremely nice guy who makes everyone feel welcome. Out back there’s a large patio where live music often plays and you can smoke if you like. Space can be tight inside, especially on the weekends. But the outside can accommodate any large group.
Live music, booze, and decent dishes — brought to you by the folks who run Esther’s Follies.
One word: sandwiches! Their turkey sandwich — slathered with cream cheese and jalapeño jelly — is one of Austin’s best.

Red Seven is an all-ages punk/hardcore/indie/DIY venue at Seventh Street and Red River. It has two stages — one’s outdoors, where you can smoke — and they occasionally charge a cover. Beer and liquor are served.
Dozens of top comedians, bands, and musicians will be playing a FREE, two-day party during SXSW. “Curated” by David Cross, it’s one of the best free events at this year’s South by Southwest Music, Film, and Interactive Festival for People Who Can Afford It.
Antone’s is a legendary music venue started by the late, great Clifford Antone when he was just 25 years old.
