Austin’s animal lovers are torn about the Austin City Council’s decision to move the Town Lake Animal Shelter. The Council voted on Thursday, October 11 to move the shelter from its current location on Cesar Chavez to a new 15-acre location in East Austin on 183 and Airport. The current location would become a satellite shelter.

Opponents argue that the new location would decrease the number of adoptions because it’s too far away. They also say that this move would be shuffling all the dirty work, such as putting animals down, out of Downtown Austin and into East Austin.

Supporters say that the new location would provide a much better quality of life for the dogs since it would have room for a dog park and an agility field and that people who want an animal will go where the animals are, even if it means driving an extra five miles. They also say that the shelter would actually be a boon for East Austin.
