Williamson County Animal Shelter: Black is beautiful

Since about half of the dogs and cats at the Williamson County Animal Shelter have black coats, the shelter thought it’d be a good idea to hold a week-long promotion where any of those animals were just $25.

Mistake #1: Calling this promotion “Black is Beautiful.” Mistake #2: Holding the promotion during the week of June 14–20. June 19 is Juneteenth.

Needless to say, this has gotten the shelter a lot of attention, and they’ve decided to no longer go through with the promotion. From MyFox Austin:

Officials at the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter say their promotion wasn’t tied to the June 19th state holiday, which commemorates freedom for enslaved blacks in Texas. Shelter director Cheryl Schneider called the planned promotion “bad timing.”

Bad timing, yes. But wouldn’t the name of the promotion be an issue no matter what time of year they decided to do it?

That cat picture is the best thing I’ve ever seen.

I wish people would take the stick out of their asses about pc comments like this. It isn’t offensive at all, maybe if you think they were comparing black people to animals, but they weren’t doing that. sigh. Very funny though. Makes me want a beautiful black kittie.

Way too sensitive!!! If people would do their research black is beautiful is a cultural movement which began in the United States of America, beginning in the 1960s and spread through the writings of the Black Consciousness Movement of Steve Biko in South Africa. How would using a term used by African Americans to promote a movement be racial? Now adays everything is sensitive huh?

“But wouldn’t the name of the promotion be an issue no matter what time of year they decided to do it?”

It’s very sad that you have to ask that question. The answer is “yes”… but I wish the answer were “it shouldn’t be”.

I say sad because most rational people with a healthy dose of common sense know that Political Correctness has simply run wild. It has evolved into a form of censorship and a device to stifle viewpoints. It is often a hindrance to open, honest debate on a varity of issues.

Anyway, that’s not quite the case here as there is no issue larger than animal adoption present. I think the situation here is due to our persistent batch of Americans that are “professional victims”. They wander around with their thin skins… seeing insult and injustice where ever they choose to perceive it. No matter that the insult or slight exists only in their own minds, they want to censor the rest of us because we couldn’t anticpate their (exaggerated) sensitivities.

Again, I am very sad to see this. The humane society was merely trying to help a bunch of poor animals that desperately need homes. Shame on you thin-skinned PC folks, if these animals would have otherwise been adopted and are instead put to sleep their deaths are on your heads.
