Two minutes with Jake Flores
That Other Paper’s Christine Acker chatted with local comic Jake Flores after he performed at Punchline, a weekly stand-up comedy open mic at ColdTowne Theater.
That Other Paper How did you get into doing comedy?
Jake Flores[Keeps looking at the tape recorder]
TOP [laughs] You don’t have to look at that. I’m standing right here.
JF Well, tape recorder… What’s your name?
TOP Christine.
JF Well, Christine. I live across the street from Cap City, so that kinda helped. The other thing is I’ve always been really into comedy and thought I’d take a crack at it. I just kinda walked over [to Cap City] and said, “Oh, I can try this! I’m funnier than half these people!” And I was!
Another thing is that when I first moved here I saw Doug Stanhope play at Emo’s, and it might sound weird, but I was a little bit moved. I was like, “Wow, this guy is really smart.” A couple of Austin comics who I did not know at the time opened for him, and I was like, “Wow, there’s a really great scene here.”
TOP Do you remember who you saw?
JF Lucas Molandes and Brendon Walsh. I didn’t know them at the time, and I was just blown away by the scene here. There’s a lot of really interesting people here. And comedy… I don’t really remember how I started it. It just became kinda like this weird addiction. It’s just a nice place to go at the end of the week and hang out and be kinda crazy. I don’t know why I do it, man.
TOP How did you hook up with ColdTowne and start doing Punchline?
JF I started off doing the open-mic circuit around Cap City, and I went to the Velveeta Room, and I just heard about this place — “You know, there’s a little cool hole-in-the-wall place.” It sounded really cool and I don’t live too far away so I just emailed in and I love it. It’s my favorite place to perform.
TOP So you go to UT?
JF I go to UT. Sort of. I’m not a very good student. I’m not really the college student type. I like this scene because it’s a lot of older folks who are more mature and actually have a sense of humor and don’t just go around quoting Borat all the time. I just do not connect with my own generation very much.
TOP Would you say you’re an old soul?
JF Definitely. I’m an old man trapped in a 20-year-old body.
TOP What are you studying?
JF Art education.
TOP Art education? I didn’t even know that existed.
JF Well, it’s studio art, but with a teaching certificate.
