Ruth Bader Goldberg and Sasha Finkle Goldberg are The Goldbergs. And based on their ridiculous bio on their MySpace page, they’d lead you to believe they have had a long career in both the rap and grunge fields of music. However, this female duo, if they were in fact ever rappers or grunge rockers, have left their past behind them and have created a similar sound to The Moldy Peaches, the indie band that inspired the Juno soundtrack. The Goldbergs capture what it’s like to be two quirky girls.

The Goldbergs will be playing at ColdTowne Theater’s see.hear.speak comedy festival on Thursday, January 24 at 8pm.

That Other Paper Who were your musical influences growing up?

The Goldbergs The Goldbergs influenced/were influenced by Snoop Dogg, Nirvana, and Emilio Estevez. Jeff Buckley is a big influence. He sang and played guitar, so we have a lot in common.

TOP Are you guys actually sisters or are you playing characters who are sisters?

TG Ruth and Sasha are sisters-in-law, friends, and business partners. Stephanie and Elizabeth are none of the aforementioned.

TOP So how are The Goldbergs different from Stephanie and Elizabeth?

TG The Goldbergs are a band. Also, The Goldbergs are in their 30s. Stephanie is not.

TOP Who’s your ideal fan?

TG Anyone who enjoys sipping Irish coffee at work and loves mixed tapes. I can only assume [“mixed tapes”] means VHS tapes that aren’t properly labeled and are all mixed up in a box. People who read Pitchfork. People with two ears and a heart. Sunset Valley Farmers’ Market patrons. Snoop Dogg.

TOP Do you both write the lyrics and music?

TG While we both write songs, Ruth doesn’t have any rhythm. So [Sasha] carries the duo in that respect. But shhhh — we don’t want to disappoint Ruth’s fans or piano students. Ruth is a poet, though, and lyrics duties are shared. She does found poetry, for inquiring minds.

TOP Do you have any new songs you’ll be breaking out for see.hear.speak, or will it just be some of your old standards from Give Satan an Inch and He’ll Be Your Ruler?

TG Yes, we’ll be unveiling our first music video — hold your applause until the show, please — and a new song about heartbreak. We do requests as well. If the crowd demands some oldies, we are ready to rock. If the crowd demands songs we don’t know how to play, we will still play them.

Catch The Goldbergs at see.hear.speak. on Thursday, January 24 at 8pm. That Other Paper is proud to sponsor this festival.
