Graffiti has long balanced between culture and contraband, existing technically as images strewn on property not owned by the artist.
Ancient graffiti advertised for prostitutes on Pompeii street walls, littered the Roman monuments with Latin curses, and even found its way to the Mayan temples. Commonly associated with current hip-hop culture, modern graffiti emerged with the political movements of the late ’60s. Since then, it has been adopted as the visual element of the rap music era.
The graffiti displayed in this slideshow represents only a small portion of Austin street art, as graffiti hides in alleys and abandoned buildings all over our city.
