Good, cheap breakfast and lunch in an unhurried environment

Wake up! It’s 11:00am and you’re still in bed. Around the world one billion old people have already eaten two meals and you’ve yet to eat one. Granted, those people didn’t stay out at Lovejoy’s until it closed like you did. But the point is you need to eat, and you need to eat well. Here’s what you do:

Get out of bed. Or else you’re not going to be eating anything, much less a plate of eggs and pancakes. Take a shower and throw on an old T-shirt and jeans and get in your car (or on you bike if you’d rather). Go to 2912 Medical Arts Street. You’ve just arrived at Red River Cafe, a little diner between Red River and Dean Keaton that’s easy to miss if you don’t know where you’re going – and that’d be your loss. This place isn’t fancy, but the food is good and cheap and the staff is friendly.

Since this is your first meal of the day, how about some breakfast (though they make a nice burger or tilapia sandwich among many other lunch items)? Take your pick from pancakes, eggs, migas and cheese, mango-stuffed French toast, or even Eggs Montreal (weekends only). There’s rarely a wait, so grab a booth and a newspaper from out front, order some coffee, and relax. Occasionally the place gets packed (noon on weekends can be busy), but you shouldn’t feel rushed here. So eat your fill and finish reading that chapter in Catch-22 that doesn’t make sense but makes you laugh your ass off.

The only downside to Red River Cafe is that they aren’t open late. But if you’re looking for a cheap, relaxed breakfast or lunch, give it a try.

Went to Red River Cafe because we had limited time, wanted a great, cheaply priced meal. We received our drinks and were quickly asked for our order. Needing a little bit more time we asked if she would give us a minute. However, our minute was too long because I had to get up to get her attention. We placed our order and waited for 30 minutes. After which time I asked about our order and the waitress forgot to place it. We walked out ignoring the apology that was given from not her but the other waiter.

Had good experiences in the past, but it just takes one on the wrong day to spur me to action in writing a review.
