Joy East is a meta-buffet with a focus on pan-Asian cuisine. But they have a little bit of everything, from lo mein to garlic bread to enchiladas to crawfish. I went there with a friend once and we agreed that for such a hodge podge, it was pretty good and quite suitable for a generalist all-you-can-eat aficionado.
The second time we went, however, was a different story. I came back from my second trip to the buffet just in time to see my friend spit out a piece of half-cooked chicken. We decided to give Joy East the benefit of the doubt and just chewed our food carefully. But my initial buffet glow of thinking, Oh wow, soooo much food!, was wearing off. Suddenly I became disgusted with the food’s mediocrity — and my gluttony. What made the evening complete was hearing my friend frantically shriek “Ew!” as we watched a roach crawl across our table. We high-tailed it out of there; as we fled, I saw a guy carrying a plate piled high with crayfish. I looked into their dead, beady little eyes and almost hurled. There was no more joy to be had.

Buffets make my flesh crawl. Not only is the food mediocre — at best — but usually the establishments are questionable too. I never understand when my friends suggest a buffet. Disgusting food in copious amounts = blech. Save your money and just run over to…well almost any Asian non-buffet joint.
