Wino Wednesdays

A glass of wine a day keeps the doctor away — or maybe that’s an apple. In any case, wine sure is tasty, isn’t it? Every Wednesday, take advantage of these winetastic events around town. Ooohh… do we smell an elegant, crisp bouquet reminiscent of dried pears and figs with underlying hints of a totally hot date? Yes.

Whim & Whine Wednesday at 219 West

Hannibal Lecter shouldn’t be the only one who knows which wine goes with liver and fava beans (ahem… a nice Chianti). Bring your date to the Warehouse District, and enjoy an ultra-premium wine flight at 219 West. If you can, stick around until 6:30 — that’s when Prix Fixe Food Pairing begins, but it only lasts as long as the food does.

Buying the food and wine

Pop quiz! Which wine goes with fish: White or red? Ding! Time’s up. It’s white. You failed. But it’s okay — the nice people at Whole Foods will help you plan a restaurant-quality dinner that you can eat at home. Don’t be afraid to ask any of the employees for assistance. The cheese man knows what kind of cheese you should get based on the wine man’s suggestion, and the wine man knows what kind of wine you should get based on the meat man’s suggestion. So take it easy: They’ve got the whole thing figured out. Somehow.

If you’re lazy and you don’t feel like cooking something for your honey, Whole Foods has a buffet-style food bar. There’s salmon pasta, blue cheese and walnut salad, apricot chicken, and more. Stay away from those heavy tomatoes, though — your meal’s gonna be $7.99 a pound, and it adds up fast.

Finding the perfect movie to get drunk to

For those winos who’ve been alive and renting movies within the past few years, you’ve probably already seen Alexander Payne’s Sideways. So let’s skip that and take a look at a list of other enjoyable movies involving, at least in some capacity, wine:

The Godfather
An Italian mob flick in which people drink wine? We’re shocked. Well, not really. But if you haven’t seen this classic in a while, or ever, check this one out. It’s violent enough to get the blood pumping and long enough to where you might get bored and let your hands wander.

Leaving Las Vegas
Okay, okay. So it’s not just wine that raging alcoholic Ben Sanderson drinks between Oscar-winning tremors — he drinks a lot of straight whiskey and vodka, too. The man just loves to booze. Heck, he’s even willing to die for it. Word to the wise: Don’t rent this unless you’re satisfied with a night that ends in tears.

Amadeus
Another long one, but this Mozart flick is well worth it. It stars Tom Hulce, perhaps better known as Pinto from Animal House, as Amadeus (perhaps better known as Mozart). The music is outstanding, so let’s hope you have a nice speaker system to blare “The Marriage of Figaro.” Because it’s a time period piece, there’s even some 18th-century wine drinking on the streets.
