T-Bird and Breaks
This local 10 piece brings together guitar, bass, drums, trombone, trumpet, two saxes, and three vocalists – most notably Tim Crane (whose hair is as slick as his suits) – to lay down some funky, dynamic R&B. The perfect cure for the Monday night blues.

Jess: To and From the Printed Page
Today opens the traveling exhibition Jess: To and From the Printed Page, which showcases works by the artist known professionally by the single name Jess. Born Burgess Collins, Jess is a chemist-turned-artist who abandoned his scientific career because of the development of atomic weapons and instead dedicated his life to art. This theme is prominent in his work, as are alchemy, the occult, and male beauty. His art is also full of literary references, an homage to his experiences in the literary world. Read more about Jess’s life and art at the Harry Ransom Center website. You can take a guided tour at 2.

PowerPoint Slam
Once again it’s time for PowerPoint Slam. For those of you who don’t know, PowerPoint Slam, conceived by our friend Donald Pitschel, is an event that allows you to create and present a PowerPoint presentation about whatever you want – taking the PowerPoint Slam out of the office setting and to the people. The event continues to get bigger each month, and it’s always a good time. “I encourage anyone who has any unusual ideas or odd juxtapositions,” says Pitschel. “If something doesn’t belong on a slideshow, and you want to put on a slide show – do it.”
If you think you want to participate, you can send a five-minute presentation to submissions@powerpointslam.com.

Whether you’re single, in a relationship, or you hate Valentine’s Day, you’ll have a good time at ColdTowne Theater’s special Valentine’s Day Stool Pigeon tonight, an event we’re proud to be sponsoring. While Stool Pigeon usually involves a celebrity guest telling a few monologues that then inspire the improvisers, tonight it’s a bit different – everyone is the celebrity guest. The all-star cast of improvisers will be improvising scenes based on audience members’ “nightmare scenarios of love gone wrong.”

Rodrigo y Gabriella
Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero both grew up in Mexico City. After their thrash metal band, Tierra Acida, didn’t pan out – they decided to travel to Dublin. Their plan was to play acoustic music in hotels. But things in Dublin don’t work like they do in Mexico City – you can’t just walk into a hotel with your guitars and get a gig. So they played on the streets until they earned a name for themselves. Rodrigo y Gabriella play in a traditional Mexican style – but they do it fast, like thrash metal.

Dan Kennedy – Rock On: An Office Power Ballad
America can’t get enough of year-or-so-in-the-life-of- someone-in-the-industry books. The Devil Wears Prada described the nitty gritty of the fashion world and The Nanny Diaries chronicled Upper-East Side New York nannying. Now we have a book about another glamorous industry, the music industry. Author Dan Kennedy got a job in music right before the industry collapsed, and his recounting of his experiences has made this book the next semi-autobiographical big thing. Don’t miss Kennedy at BookPeople – it’s sure to be entertaining.
