“And now, here’s a song by a gay guy.” I’m not sure when Rickrolling became the biggest thing on the internet, further cementing Generation Y’s complete immersion in a culture of absurdism, but it’s not surprising that our new collective pastime is sending each other disguised Rick Astley YouTube videos.
What’s better is the spinoffs that Rickrolling has generated. David at Ironic Sans gives us the WikRoll:
A Wikroll is when a person rudely interrupts an on-line conversation to provide a link that seems to have nothing to do with the topic at hand, claiming that it goes to the video for Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.” But the link actually goes to a Wikipedia article that adds relevant insight to the discussion.
And now I propose the next step – which, if anyone steals, I will either sue or thank them. One of the two. I think we need to start manufacturing greeting cards which, on the outside, claim that there’s a Birthday Surprise inside – but when you open it…WHAM! An embedded sound chip starts playing “Never Gonna Give You Up” and Rick Astley stares you right in the face.
All this to say that since the internet is pretty much just irony, absurdism, and porn these days, I think it’s high time that we migrated at least the irony and absurdism back to the IRLs.
