Early voting for state, congressional, legislative, and county runoff runoff races begins today and extends through Friday. In case you’re not familiar with the concept of runoff voting, here are the basics: If one candidate does not receive a clear majority in any of the primary races, there is a second election – called the runoffs – to determine a clear winner. It’s sort of like the second round of a tournament. For example, in the March 4 primary race for Travis County District Attorney, four people ran: Rosemary Lehmberg, Mindy Montford, Gary Cobb, and Rick Reed. No single candidate got 50% of the vote, but Lehmberg and Montford placed first and second, so in the runoffs, voters will choose between the two for a clear winner.
