Big Brother: Austin launches red light camera program this Memorial Weekend
Austin will be rolling out its much anticipated automated camera program aimed at catching motorists who run red lights. The unveiling has been appropriately scheduled to coincide with Memorial Day Weekend — a time when citizens honor fallen military servants by getting blitzed on Icehouse and then driving their cars.
Starting this Friday, May 23, the first camera system will become operational at the intersection of 11th St and the I-35 northbound access road.
In the following weeks, eight more cameras will go on-line at the following locations:
Riverside Drive and Pleasant Valley Road
MoPac Expressway (Burnet) northbound and Howard Lane/Wells Branch Parkway
Mopac Expressway (Burnet) southbound and Howard Lane/Wells Branch Parkway
Lamar Boulevard and Ben White Boulevard eastbound
Mopac southbound service road and U.S. 290 eastbound
I-35 south bound service road and 15th Street
Lamar Boulevard and Ben White Boulevard westbound/northbound
I-35 southbound service road and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard
Fear not, wary citizen: All camera-monitored intersections will be identifiable by signs that read “Photo Enforced” — like the one pictured above.
