Before he was New York City’s Young Love, Dan Keyes was in the Austin band Recover. Now, with the release of Too Young to Fight It, he’s coming home hipper than ever for ACL Fest. We talked to Dan about his upcoming set at the festival.
That Other Paper What can we expect from your live show this year at ACL?
Dan Keyes Pure joy. I’m really excited to play. Austin is RAD — all caps. Also, the set will be party and, um, hot and sweaty.
TOP When you get back to Austin, is there anything that you absolutely have to do?
DK Get drunk at Trudy’s, a burger at Top Notch and Casino El Camino. Polvo’s. Get drunk at Beauty Bar. Barton Springs. Break into a country club in the middle of the night and go swimming. Drugs. Kyle’s house.
TOP What’s the difference between New York’s club/dance scene and Austin’s?
DK It depends on what kind of club you mean. New York has places like Spiro’s and also has little dance parties like at Whisky Bar and Beauty Bar in Austin. I’ve never been to Spiro’s by the way. I’ve been to some really massive dance parties in New York that are like a giant celebration. All kinds of people there. The dance party kids in Austin dress better. But it’s mainly white kids.
TOP Who else are you excited to see at the festival?
DK LCD Soundsystem. Bob Dylan.
TOP How is performing as Young Love different from Recover, besides the different musical styles of course?
DK I play guitar for only a few songs with Young Love so I move around more. I sing less in Recover.
TOP What’s your advice to the average Austin hipster looking to move to NYC?
DK Everyone in Austin is hip and not so average. Advice on how to move to New York? Well, if that’s what someone wants to do, just pack a bag, go, and once you get here, hustle! Austin rules though, you know.
TOP For you, what makes a live performance unforgettable?
DK When Daft Punk is on stage. It’s insane.
TOP So why should we come see you at ACL?
DK How about we let the music and show do the talking? If you miss us there I think we might play a party at Beauty Bar, so that will be a PARTY — all caps.
